Video: UConn Huskies Football To Be Seen As Power 5 Team By Big Ten

The UConn Huskies football team is currently in the American Athletic Conference which is not considered a Power 5 conference. If you talk to the American commissioner Mike Aresco, he may beg to differ as he believes the American could be the the sixth league in a Power 6 alignment.

However things are looking up in regards to future scheduling of Power 5 teams for the UConn Huskies football program.

According to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com, the UConn Huskies are among six teams that Big Ten football teams can schedule as their one non-conference Power 5 opponent beginning in 2016. That will put the Big Ten teams on par with the ACC (2016) and SEC (2017).

The other schools included with the UConn Huskies are the BYU Cougars, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Navy Midshipmen, Army Black Knights and Cincinnati Bearcats.

UConn’s future schedule already includes two Big Ten schools in Illinois and Indiana. The UConn Huskies are scheduled to face Illinois at home and Indiana on the road in 2019. Then they’ll go to Illinois and face  Indiana at home in 2020.

UConn Huskies head coach Bob Diaco wouldn’t mind seeing some of the other Big Ten schools with the exception of Iowa where he played football under Hayden Fry.
