UConn Huskies football LB Matt Walsh played his high school football at Hand High in Madison, CT but also dabbled a bit on offense at times. UConn Huskies head football coach Bob Diaco also played linebacker in high school in New Jersey.
It was stated that Walsh most likely didn’t have the tangible traits to play linebacker at the FBS level. And at the time, UConn Huskies then head coach Paul Pasqualoni thought Walsh could make the biggest impact as a football.
As a freshman, Walsh was named the starter at fullback for the UConn Huskies and saw some action in his first two seasons while also playing special teams. This past spring, Walsh was asked to move to linebacker since the new UConn Huskies offense under offensive coordinator Frank Verducci appears not to have a big role for the fullback position.
Walsh worked hard throughout the spring and over the summer and during preseason camp, he put himself into the conversation at linebacker. Last week, he found himself starting against Army’s triple-option due to his experience in high school against it.
And now with Marquise Vann day-to-day and possibly not playing this Saturday, Walsh could himself playing linebacker on the big stage for the UConn Huskies in SEC country.
