Video: UConn Football Tight Ends Need To Be Utilized More

I hate to make this comparison because of one of the players is in jail but the UConn football team could have its own version of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez in Tommy Myers and Alec Bloom.

In no means am I saying that either one is like Hernandez the person. It is meant in a football sense where New England Patriots football coach Bill Belichick used his two tight ends in the offense.

Both Myers and Bloom are flexible enough where they can both line up in the slot, outside, in the back field, or just stay on the line. At 6’5 (Myers) and 6’6 (Bloom), the UConn football tight end duo can cause matchup problems for the opposing defense just like Gronk and Hernandez did back in the day.

Here are their stats over the first six games:

Game 1:  Myers – two catches for 83 yards and a touchdown; Bloom – one catch for 16 yards.
Game 2: Bloom – three catches for 42 yards; Myers – one catch for 14 yards.
Game 3:  Bloom – one catch for 13 yards.
Game 4: Bloom – one catch for 11 yards; Myers – one catch for six yards and a touchdown
Game 5:  Myers – two catches for 35 yards
Game 6: Bloom – four catches for 67 yards; Myers – one catch for 11 yards.

With Noel Thomas and the emergence of Tyraiq Beals and the other freshman wide receivers, UConn football coach Bob Diaco has many weapons he can go to. Utilizing the tight end duo would free up the other receivers.

It will be interesting to see how much UConn football offensive coordinator Frank Verducci lines up Myers and Bloom going forward. Hopefully the improvement of the offensive line allows the pair to go out in patterns instead of having to pass block.
