STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut redshirt junior offensive lineman Andreas Knappe (Silkeborg, Denmark) has been named to the 2015 Watch List for the Wuerffel Trophy and has been nominated for the 2015 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
The Good Works Team recognizes players from across the country who exemplifies a superior commitment to community service and volunteerism.
Knappe played in ten games for the Huskies last season at right tackle, including the final seven of the year. He played as a reserve in 2013.
The communications major is a two-time member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
Knappe regularly participated in the community service efforts of the UConn football team. He has visited with middle school students in East Hartford, Conn, and mentored the students on academics, social issues and athletics.
He run youth football clinics during breaks when he returns to his native Denmark. He has also participated in reading programs at a school in Coventry.
Knappe has volunteered at annual KJLife Flag Football Tournament for the past three years, held each year in Glastonbury.
