Bryant Shirreffs Likely Starter For UConn Football

When the UConn football team takes the field next Thursday, September 3, against the Villanova Wildcats, the UConn Huskies will mostly likely have their third straight different starting QB to start the season.

2015 UConn Football Practice No. 6

Bryant Shirreffs should open up the season as the starting QB for the UConn Football team in 2015.

In 2013, it was Chandler Whitmer who got the starting nod. In 2014, the now-retired Casey Cochran beat out Whitmer and Tim Boyle. And in 2015, it looks as though Bryant Shirreffs will get that nod.

Last Thursday after UConn football’s team photo day and practice, head coach Bob Diaco didn’t announce his starter as it was expected. He stated he would wait until game week although he knew which way he was leaning. With UConn football’s media day and game week approaching, the official announcement could come sometime between Wednesday and Sunday.

Based on what I saw at that practice with the number of reps, it was evident Shirreffs would be the starter with Boyle as his backup and Garrett Anderson as the third-stringer.

If you wanted to base it on production in the practices I’ve seen, overall Shirreffs has been the better of the trio. I will say Boyle has looked like a completely different quarterback than we’ve seen of him in the past.

And with Boyle being the only one who took snaps last year in a game, he’s an experienced backup to have should Shirreffs, if he gets the nod, falter.

It’s been since the Dan Orlovsky days that the UConn football team has gotten great production from a quarterback on a consistent basis.

With Shirreffs having three years of eligibility left, Boyle and Anderson having two years, and Tyler Davis having most likely four more years after this season, the Huskies could finally have some stability at the position.
