American Athletic Conference Football Players of the Week – Week 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the first week of the college football season.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Keevan Lucas • Jr. • WR • Tulsa • Abilene, Texas
Lucas had 10 receptions for 193 yards and two touchdowns and had two rushing attempts for 21 yards to help Tulsa to a 47-44 overtime win against Florida Atlantic. He had four receptions for 58 yards on the Golden Hurricane’s game-tying drive in the final minute. Lucas’ yardage total was the second-highest among FBS players in Week 1.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Matakevich • Sr. • LB • Temple • Stratford, Conn.
Matakevich keyed a Temple defense that limited Penn State to 10 points and 180 yards of offense in the Owls’ 27-10 victory — their first win against the Nittany Lions since 1941. Matakevich tied an American Athletic Conference record with three sacks, resulting in a loss of 20 yards, as part of a defensive effort that produced a league-record 10 sacks. Matakevich finished with seven tackles against Penn State, giving him 362 stops for his career — the most among active FBS players.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Roderick Proctor • Sr. • WR • Memphis • Orlando, Fla.
Proctor had 135 all-purpose yards, including 84 yards on three punt returns, to help Memphis to a 63-7 win against Missouri State. He scored a touchdown on a 63-yard punt return in the first quarter, ending a streak of 129 games without a touchdown by a Memphis return man. Proctor also had three receptions for 51 yards for the Tigers, who extended their winning streak to eight games.

Rushed for a career-high 154 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries in a 28-20 win against Towson.

Greg Ward Jr. • Jr. • QB • Houston • Tyler, Texas
Had 382 yards of total offense in a 52-24 win against Tennessee Tech. Completed 21 of 28 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a game-high 107 yards on 13 carries.

Chris Swain • Jr. • FB • Navy • Macon, Ga.
Rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, averaging 11.5 yards per attempt, in a 48-10 win against Colgate.

Bruce Hector • So. • DT • USF • Tampa, Fla.
Had six tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for loss in a 51-3 win against Florida A&M. Led a defense that registered 15 tackles for loss and allowed 182 yards.

Jahad Thomas • Jr. • RB • Temple • Elizabeth, N.J.
Rushed for a game-high 135 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in a 27-10 win against Penn State. Had five runs of 10 or more yards.
